History: The Boy from the Gray Terminal

Personality: Sabo is a warm-hearted and free-spirited boy who is unlucky enough to be born as a noble.

As young as five years old, he realized that because of his noble heritage, his entire life was planned out for him decades in advance. For his parents, Sabo is merely a tool to secure prestige for the family in the future. And because Sabo is a kind and loving boy, he did his best to please his parents. But his attempts to win genuine affection from them were coldly rejected, and even his own welfare was put aside by his mother after getting in a fight against a boy from a royal family. Sabo hates it. He hates the coldness and the suffocating lifestyle of the nobles, where only reputation and status matters. He would often slip out from his home, visiting other parts of the kingdom, going as far as the trash mountain, the Gray Terminal, where his father has forbidden him to go, saying the people who lives there belonged in an inferior world than their own. But Sabo disregards this order completely, preferring the crude, yet warm reception of the folks in the trash mountain to the nobles' pretentious airs. The stories of adventure and travels the people in the Terminal shares with him became one of his refuge from the coldness of High Town.

Later, when he discovers the royal's plan to burn the Gray Terminal and the nobles acted like nothing is wrong and this is actually a good thing, Sabo is horrified. People are going to die and yet none of the nobles cared because to them, the folks in the Terminal are garbage too. Sabo's so disgusted by his own people, thinking that all of them have gone mad and are rotten to the core, that he declares that he is ashamed to have been born as a noble.

Because of the stifled life he lived as a noble child, it becomes his dream to sail away from the Goa Kingdom, to live free as a pirate. He dreams of visiting different places and write a book about his adventures. To achieve this, he ran away from High Town to live on his own in the Gray Terminal and began stealing to save money to buy a ship. Helping him collect the money is his first real friend, Ace, who also dreams of becoming a pirate. Both are fiercely protective of their goals that when Luffy appears and becomes a threat to their dream, Sabo readily agrees with Ace that killing Luffy off before he tells anyone about their hoard is the best option. Luckily, despite the rough life they lead, neither Ace nor Sabo knows how to kill.

When the Bluejam pirate Porchemy takes Luffy to torture the location to Sabo's and Ace's treasure out of him, Sabo helped Ace move their hoard, then goes back to check if Luffy cracked already. To his horror, he finds Luffy beaten bloody, still refusing to talk. Sabo fetches Ace and goes together to save Luffy. Sabo quickly secures Luffy, but Ace refuses to run from fighting Porchemy. Sabo warns Ace that Porchemy isn't like the usual punks they beat up and is much more dangerous, but Ace refuses to move. Despite his own misgivings, Sabo stands by his friend and helps him defeat the pirate.

Later, Sabo complains on Ace's recklessness and asks why he wants to die so much. While witnessing Ace grudgingly accepting Luffy as a friend, Sabo has to stop the two from fighting twice, before pointing out their more immediate problem, that they're now being hunted by the pirates.

Sabo's loyalty and friendship quickly extends from Ace to include Luffy. He is at his happiest whenever the three of them are together, even trusting them with the truth of his heritage and his dream. In that same day, they share cups of sake and seals their bond as brothers. As a brother, Sabo is fair and level-headed, in contrast to the D's. He's able to keep up and challenge Ace as an equal, be nice and encouraging when Luffy needs it, while indulging on boyish mischief like any carefree kid.

The bond he shares with Ace and Luffy becomes Sabo's most precious treasure. There is nothing Sabo wouldn't do for his brothers, to the point of giving up his freedom and happiness if it could save them. This is seen when he readily agrees to return to High Town and live his life according to his father's wishes, as long as Ace and Luffy wouldn't be harmed by the Bluejam pirates his father commissioned to find him. Even when pressured to place the blame on his brothers to save the family's reputation, Sabo refuses, saying Ace and Luffy aren't bad people and insisting that a crime is a crime, and that he ran away on his own and that the three of them acted on their own free will. The night of the burning of Gray Terminal, Sabo tries his best to reach the gates, despite being thrown aside by the guards every time he approaches, wanting desperately to make sure Ace and Luffy are away from the trash heap that night.

After the fire, he's brought back and locked in his room by his father, boarding up his windows and even hiring guards to make sure he won't escape again. Sabo is told to stay, study well and make his parents happy, just as all children are meant to do. Still, on the day the Celestial Dragon is to arrive, Sabo finds a way to escape once more. This time, he steals a fishing boat and sets sail, raising his pirate flag, determined to leave the country once and for all. When he hears people calling for him to turn back, Sabo declares that his greatest fear is to be consumed by the kingdom and become a completely different person.

There's no way he's turning back.

Strengths:

Physical: In order to survive the lawless Gray Terminal and the harsh environment of Mt. Corvo, Sabo learned to fight for his life early on. Sabo is strong enough to beat down grown adults, and can hunt and fight wild animals in the forest on his own. He also moves very fast as befitting of his profession as thief. He uses a long metal pipe as a weapon, using it as a staff to beat and swipe at enemies.

In combat, he's somehow able to match Ace's incredible strength, his wins in spars being 24 to Ace's 26. Luffy who ate a Devil Fruit and is a rubber-human, has zero wins against both Sabo and Ace.

Mental: Although his parents complained on his poor grades, it's probably because Sabo had little interest on the subjects and not because of his natural intelligence. He's often seen as smarter than his brothers (being the one to design the blueprint to the trio's secret base; preferring to use traps and using strategies when fighting/hunting animals; his dream of becoming a writer) and is also wise enough to pick his battles (such as preferring to run away after rescuing Luffy, knowing Porchemy is a dangerous enemy and that Bluejam will come after them later).

Even as a child, Sabo is able to somehow understand concepts such as oppression, discrimination, and the value of freedom, enough to realize that if he continued staying in High Town, he'll end up like the rest of the nobles and will never be free.

Emotional: Sabo is a fairly optimistic kid, preferring to always hope for the best whenever possible. Even when things look bleak, he has enough will and determination to make it through, such as when he was able to escape High Town despite being locked up and guarded.

Sabo is the most level-headed of the brothers; the "nicer older brother", as Luffy later remarked. He would often end the D's petty arguments and calm Ace and Luffy with a praise, a fair observation, or by drawing their attention back to more important matters. He also has no problem in openly expressing concern for the well-being for his brothers. When Gol D. Roger came up in a conversation, he noticed at once Ace's strange behavior and became worried, to the point of telling Luffy the truth about Ace's parentage just so they could offer Ace some distraction. (It worked, but not in the way Sabo planned.) Sabo would often encourage Luffy to improve his Gomu attacks and is always greatly pleased whenever Luffy succeeds. When Luffy ran away for a week, Sabo was most worried and even got angry when Ace expressed his indifference to Luffy's well-being, reminding Ace that Luffy's their little brother. Sometimes, Ace would complain that Sabo's being too soft to Luffy, and Sabo would simply reply that there's nothing wrong with that.

Weaknesses:

Physical: Though Sabo is much stronger and faster than an ordinary boy his age, he's still an ordinary boy himself. No Devil Fruit, no special bloodline to give him any power boost. When surrounded, he could easily be grabbed from behind and held against his will. And though he's an experienced fighter, Sabo seems to unable to physically attack his own blood family, no matter how angry and furious he is. The closest thing to assault he made was on his adopted noble brother Stelly, grabbing his shirt to demand information he needed.

Mental: Sabo is a ten year old boy. He can be as naive, bratty and rude as any child, such as when he cheerfully called Dadan a "shitty old bag" right to her face. He also seems to have poor judgment at times, like when he thought Luffy could keep quiet about Roger around Ace, and when he first thought everything was fine on the day of the fire just because everyone in High Town is acting normally.

When being oppressed or at a disadvantage, Sabo's usual reaction is to escape. In a fight, he often uses this response as a tactical retreat, though some would probably see this as cowardice, especially against Ace's more confrontational "no running away" habit.

Part of Sabo's greatest fear is to be consumed by the nobles' superiority complex and thus become a different person.

Emotional: Luffy may be the crybaby, but it was Sabo who shed tears the most from emotional hurts out of the trio. As a young child, he cried after being rejected and dismissed by his parents, then on the day he was forced to leave Ace and Luffy in exchange for their safety. During the burning of the Gray Terminal was when he was most devastated, fearing for his brother's lives and furious at the nobles' cruelty, that he cried his shame of being a noble in the Revolutionary leader's arms.

Sabo is vulnerable to being manipulated, usually by his parents. Using his emotional attachment to Ace and Luffy was how his father forced him to return to High Town and keep him from returning to the Gray Terminal, threatening to have the Bluejam crew kill his brothers if Sabo refused to cooperate.

Part of Sabo's greatest fear is to be chained down or locked up.

Also, because of his canon point, Sabo will have a hard time dealing with his eventual death during the first few months and though he'll learn to accept it, it'll always haunt him.

First Person:

So people can actually talk through this journal, huh? Okay, that's good! Maybe someone can hear this and help me out? My ship's got... ["blown to bits", but there's no way Sabo can say that out loud.] well, I think my ship capsized or something, and I drifted off to this beach. I thought I ended back where I'm from, but this place feels too different. From what I remember from the maps of East Blue, the nearest island next to Dawn is the one where the Shimotsuki Village is. But I'm pretty sure this isn't that island. For one, nobody there's got this weirdass wings. What the hell's up with this anyway?

Well, whatever. Is there a village closer to the shore other than the one in this map? A port town, preferably. One with ships and boats. This one's too far inland, and I need to stay near the sea. I'm not planning on staying here long, but hey. You can't go out to the sea without stocking up.

Third Person: (Samples must be 300 words or above. Remember to write using proper grammar, verb tenses, and paragraphs.)

Sabo stared at journal, thinking back on the message he left. He didn't mention any specific details, save for the Dawn Island and the Shimotsuki Village so his identity's probably safe for now. He's probably being paranoid, but if there were anyone from High Town listening to the broadcast, they might recognize him as the boy who disturbed the World Government ceremony and bring him back to his father. Then he'll get locked up in the mansion for the rest of his life.

"No way that's going to happen," he muttered, staring at the open sea before him. "I'm not going back."

And then, his thoughts turned to the brothers he left behind. Sabo's heart still ached from the way he parted with Ace and Luffy, how powerless he was to be with them and protect them from his father's threats at the same time. And then there's that gripping fear that they'd been caught in that fire in the Gray Terminal.

Sabo shook his head hard. "No! They're strong, the fire wouldn't get them easily. They're safe!" There's no way to make sure, but despite seeing how fierce the fire was from the Gate himself and then hearing that nothing remained in the Terminal the day after, Sabo sure as hell's going to hold on to the hope that Ace and Luffy were fine. That they got his letter before setting out and even probably annoyed that he sailed first before them.

Yes, that's how it should be. And they wouldn't have to know what happened to him afterwards. Not the burning ship. Not the second cannon ball flying straight towards him. Sabo clenched his eyes shut, trying to block the wave of fear and hopelessness from his last memory.

That impact will kill him. Barely out of High Town, barely grasping his freedom, and he's going to die....

His wings started to ache worse, jostling him back to the present. The present where he's alive and well, albeit having weird, new appendages. Sabo rubbed the joint with a grimace. "Damn, this pain's too real for me to be dreaming. So maybe... I really survived that blast?"

It's hard to imagine how though. But whatever it is that happened, he's here now. Sabo, if nothing else, was adaptable. He's able to survive in the Gray Terminal for five years on his own, he'll manage to live this one out too. For now, he needed to get further away. If he's right about this location, he's still too near Goa Kingdom. Too near his cage.

Too near his brothers, too... But no. He promised he'd meet them in the sea. And that's exactly what he's going to do. No going back now.

Sabo stood up, jamming his hat back on his head, and studied the length of the beach. If he walked along the shore he's bound to see a town. Or a dock even. Maybe he can steal another ship...
